Preparing to get married in Massachusetts: FAQs!

As a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace, I want to share helpful information that typically comes up with couples:

How do we get a marriage license?

Couples must apply in person at any Massachusetts city or town hall. You do not need to apply in the town where your ceremony will take place—the license is valid statewide. Both parties must be present with valid photo ID, and there is a three-day waiting period after applying. After those three days, you will need to pick up the license. Additional information can be found on the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website here.

What should we check when picking up the license?

When you receive your marriage license, carefully review all information for accuracy, including full legal names and dates of birth. Any errors must be corrected by the clerk before your wedding day.

Do we need to bring the license to the ceremony?

Yes. You must bring the physical marriage license with you on your wedding day. Please also bring your photo IDs.

What happens after the ceremony?

Immediately after the ceremony, I will complete and sign the marriage license and mail or deliver it to the city or town hall where it was issued.

When can we get a copy of my marriage certificate?

Certified copies are typically available a few weeks or so after the ceremony from the city or town where you obtained your license. You will need to reach out to the city/town.

Will you help us with our ceremony script?

Absolutely. When you work with me, I will help you draft a ceremony script that reflects your relationship and values. The ceremony is fully customizable—from tone and length to readings, vows, and personal vows to make your day yours.

Should we double-check requirements?

Yes. Marriage requirements can change, so always confirm details with the city or town hall when applying for your license.

If you have more questions, please make sure to ask prior to your ceremony, and I can answer, or point you in the right direction if I don't know the answer.
