Preparing to get married in Massachusetts: FAQs!
Frequently Asked Questions for Your Massachusetts Wedding
As a Massachusetts Justice of the Peace, I frequently assist couples with logistical and ceremonial questions. Here is essential information to help you prepare for your wedding day:
The Marriage License
How do we obtain a Massachusetts marriage license?
Couples must apply in person at any Massachusetts city or town hall. The license is valid statewide, so you do not need to apply in the town where your ceremony will take place. Both parties must be present with valid photo identification.
There is a three-day waiting period after applying before the license is valid. After this waiting period, you will need to return to the clerk's office to pick up the official document. For the most current requirements, please refer to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts website.
What should we verify when picking up the license?
When you receive your marriage license, please carefully review all information for accuracy, including your full legal names and dates of birth. Any errors must be corrected by the clerk before your wedding day to ensure legal validity.
Do we need to bring the license to the ceremony?
Yes, the physical marriage license is required. Please ensure you bring the license and your photo IDs with you on your wedding day. This is the official document that makes your marriage legal.
What happens with the license after the ceremony?
Immediately following your ceremony, I will complete and sign the marriage license as your officiant. I will then promptly mail or hand-deliver the completed license back to the city or town hall where it was issued for official recording.
When and how can we get a copy of the marriage certificate?
Certified copies of your marriage certificate are typically available a few weeks after the ceremony. You must contact the city or town clerk's office where you obtained your license to request and purchase a certified copy.

Ceremony Planning
Will you help us write our ceremony script?
Absolutely. When you choose to work with me, my commitment is to help you draft a deeply personal and meaningful ceremony script that truly reflects your relationship, values, and vision. Your ceremony is fully customizable—from the tone and length to personalized readings, unique vows, and meaningful rituals—to ensure your day is authentically yours.
Should we confirm current requirements?
Yes, always. Marriage license requirements and regulations can occasionally change. It is always best practice to confirm the most up-to-date details directly with the city or town hall when you apply for your license.
Do you have answers to other questions?
If you have any further questions about the legal aspects or ceremony planning, please reach out! I am happy to provide clarity or point you in the right direction if I don't know the answer. Let's make your Massachusetts wedding seamless and joyful!
